Google Doodles

The first Google Doodle was in honor of the Burning Man Festival of 1998.The doodle was designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin to notify users of their absence in case the servers crashed. Subsequent Google Doodles were designed by an outside contractor, until Larry and Sergey asked then-intern Dennis Hwang to design a logo for Bastille Day in 2000. Hwang has been designing the Google Doodles ever since.

Google doodles have been produced for the birthdays of several noted artists and scientists, including Andy Warhol, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Rabindranath Tagore, Louis Braille, Percival Lowell, Edvard Munch, Nikola Tesla, Béla Bartók, René Magritte, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Robert Moog, Akira Kurosawa, Satyajit Ray, H. G. Wells, Freddie Mercury, Samuel Morse, Hans Christian Ørsted, Mahatma Gandhi, Dennis Gabor, Constantin Brâncuși, Antonio Vivaldi, Abdel Halim Hafez, Jules Verne and Leonhard Euler, among others.

Google goes old school to celebrate 15th birthday

Google in 1998

To celebrate its 15th anniversary, Google is letting users time travel and see what the search engine website looked like when it launched.
When users go to Google.com and search for "Google in 1998" the website transforms from its modern 2013 design to replicate what it looked like back in the late '90s.

NASA Data Reveals Mega-Canyon under Greenland Ice Sheet

Friday, August 30, 2013

Data from a NASA airborne science mission reveals evidence of a large and previously unknown canyon hidden under a mile of Greenland ice.

The canyon has the characteristics of a winding river channel and is at least 460 miles (750 kilometers) long, making it longer than the Grand Canyon. In some places, it is as deep as 2,600 feet (800 meters), on scale with segments of the Grand Canyon. This immense feature is thought to predate the ice sheet that has covered Greenland for the last few million years.

The Top SEO Trends of 2013

Sunday, August 4, 2013

Due to the constant evolution of search engine algorithms, it's important to keep your SEO practices up to date. If Google Panda and Penguin (and now, Penguin 2.0) have proven anything, it's that some techniques quickly become outdated. Many tactics that worked last year are completely ineffective now. That's why it's necessary to make the proper adjustments along the way. Let's take a look at some of the top SEO trends of 2013 and how to use them to benefit your campaign.

Mobile, Mobile, Mobile

A few years ago, mobile devices like smartphones and tablets were just starting to catch on. According to Marketing Land, almost 40 percent of people are now accessing the Internet via mobile devices. When it comes to social media, that figure is even higher at 55 percent. If this growth pattern continues, half of all Internet browsing will be done on mobile devices within a few years.

This means it's never been more important to adapt to this trend and make your website content mobile-friendly. Otherwise, you're giving up traffic, conversions and sales. Even if you offer a fantastic product/service and have a great-looking site, mobile users are likely to go to competitors when they have a negative experience on your website due to its lack of mobile-optimization and become frustrated. Luckily, there are a few ways to meet the demand for mobile.

• Create a mobile version of a website
• Implement responsive web design (RWD)
• Utilize a WordPress plugin like UppSite to convert a site into an HTML 5 app

Each of these strategies has advantages and disadvantages, but can help you capitalize on the mobile trend. Creating an alternate mobile version tends to be less expensive than RWD, but causes you to lose valuable link-juice and SEO "equity."

Clarke keeps Australia in control

Friday, August 2, 2013

David Warner edged one to first slip off the wicketkeeper's thigh, England v Australia, 3rd Investec Test, Old Trafford, 2nd day, August 2, 2013

Australia's captain Michael Clarke soared beyond 150 but his team's progress was pockmarked by wasteful moments from Steve Smith and David Warner on the second morning of the third Investec Ashes Test at Old Trafford. A century beckoned for Smith until he slogged unwisely at Graeme Swann, before Warner - with Clarke's approval - used up the tourists' final review for an obvious edged catch.

Clarke and Brad Haddin took Australia to lunch with plenty of run-scoring intent, and it will now be a question of how many runs Clarke wants and also how much time he believes will be required to press for victory in a match England need only to draw to retain the urn. Clarke's unbeaten innings is his highest against England, and his stand with Smith lifted the visitors to a strong position.

South Africa hope for respite in Pallekele

Angelo Mathews talks to coach Graham Ford during a practice session, Pallekele, July 25, 2013

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium was modeled on Supersport Park in Pretoria. The grass banks and open spaces are similar, the stands bear the same minimalistic, angular roof and even the floodlight towers seem like carbon copies. Unlike Supersport Park, the Pallekele ground is nestled in the hills and closeted by heavy vegetation, but having struggled with adapting to Sri Lankan conditions, the South Africa team will hope it is more like home than the Premadasa Stadium.

The surface has gained a reputation for being more conducive to fast bowling than most in the subcontinent, and the tall South Africa quicks should enjoy the bounce and carry that has often been a feature at the venue. They are on an 11-loss streak against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, but perhaps they will also be buoyed by the fact that Sri Lanka have lost half their completed matches at the ground, most recently to Bangladesh in March. Kandy's cooler temperatures, and mountain breeze will be a welcome change from Colombo's heavy heat as well.

Sri Lanka 2-0 up after rainy day

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

Dinesh Chandimal plays a lofted shot, Sri Lanka v South Africa, 2nd ODI, Colombo, July 23, 2013

Sri Lanka 223 for 9 (Dilshan 43, Chandimal 43, Morkel 3-34) beat South Africa 104 for 5 (Herath 2-16) by 17 runs (D/L method)

A second, successive sub-standard performance with the bat saw South Africa undo their significantly improved showing with the ball to go 2-0 down in the series. On a slow surface, batting was laboured, and Sri Lanka's attack was able to defend with ease, the spinners getting the opposition batsmen into a tangle, again.

Lorgat wants to mend relationship with BCCI

Monday, July 22, 2013

Former ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat, who was appointed Cricket South Africa CEO, said he was saddened about his poor relationship with BCCI.

Ending weeks of speculation raised by India's reported opposition, Cricket South Africa appointed Lorgat as its CEO on Saturday, a post that was lying vacant after Gerald Majola was sacked in October last year due to the IPL bonus-payments controversy.

Elected leaders around the world are struggling. They're down in the polls, their economies are stagnant, their people are protesting, and their oppositions are betting on their failure. There is, however, one leader who has seemingly bucked that trend – and it's not by jailing his opposition or shutting down the press. He's the president of a free, democratic, capitalist country. Is this person Superman?

Ton-up Chris Gayle powers West Indies to 6-wicket win over Sri Lanka

Chris Gayle's 109 came off 100 deliveries and was embellished with seven sixes and nine fours. That pushed his team on to 209 for four off 37.5 overs and they earned a bonus point as well for reaching their target before the conclusion of the 40th over.

Chris Gayle notched his first one-day hundred against Sri Lanka as he led West Indies to a crushing six-wicket victory with more than 12 overs to spare in the opening match of the three-nation international series at Sabina Park on Friday.

2013 ICC Champions Trophy Final: India vs England - As it happened...

ENGLAND innings:

Over 20 || Score 124/8

Ashwin to bowl the last over. The first ball spun away and Broad didn’t connect, 15 needed from 5, Dhoni appeals for a stumping and that again looked close, but the decision is not out. The second ball was a low full-toss, Broad sweeps, and connects well as the ball quickly travels to deep square leg for a boundary! Good shot under pressure. 11 needed from 4. Broad works the next ball towards mid-off for a single, 10 needed from 3, Tredwell on strike. The next ball was nudged towards wide of mid-off by Tredwell and a diving effort saves two runs, 8 needed from 2. Tredwell worked the fifth ball straight down the ground for two runs, 6 needed off the last ball. Can Tredwell do a Miandad? Can Ashwin be the hero? The last ball spun away and Tredwell didn’t connect, India have won the ICC CHAMPIONS TROPHY BY 5 RUNS!

INDIA innings:

Over 20 || Score 129/7

Bresnan to bowl the final over. The first ball was a bouncer and Ashwin worked that to deep square leg for a single. Jadeja worked the second ball straight down the ground for a single and Ashwin is run-out after he ran for the second one. Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes to the crease. Jadeja takes a single off the third ball. Bhuvan took a single off the fourth ball. Jadeja gets another length ball and he spanks that over long-on for another SIX! Bresnan bowled a short ball to end the over and Jadeja pulled that for two runs at midwicket. So India have managed to reach a decent total, after a middle-order collapse. Kohli and Jadeja have played two good innings giving their bowlers and fans something to cheer about.

Complaints regarding LTTE sympathizers who protested against SL Cricket team in UK.

The External Affairs Ministry is concerned about a group of LTTE supporters carrying flags with Tiger Emblem and intruded to the Cardiff Cricket Ground during the ICC Champion Trophy Semi Finals yesterday.

External Affairs Ministry Secretary Karunathilaka Amunugama told our news team that instructions have already been given to the Sri Lankan High Commission in the United Kingdom to ascertain the facts and take necessary actions.

He also stated that the Sri Lanka High Commission has already made complaints to the UK Cricket Board and police regarding this incident.

Two LTTE supporters carrying flags with Tiger Emblems intruded into the grounds during the last balling of Sri Lanka against India yesterday and later another 5 of their companions followed suit.

Later police removed them, but another group of LTTE supporters staged a protest 500 metres away from the dressing room of the Sri Lankan cricketers.

Later the protesters have blocked the bus in which the Sri Lankan cricketers were traveling but allowed the another bus to proceed that was carrying Indian cricketers.

Indian media has given wide publicity today to the statements made by the protesting LTTE supporters.

However the Sri Lankan High Commission had requested the UK security authorities to pay special attention to the safety of the Sri Lankan Cricketers during the ICC Champion Trophy in Cardiff.

Meanwhile a discussion took place about this in parliament yesterday.

That was when UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera queried about the security provided for the Sri Lanka Cricket Team.

The Government Chief Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardhana replied the query.

Windows Blue Start Screen

Microsoft has sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses. Next up is Windows 8.1, aka 'Windows Blue'. Here we look at what is Windows Blue (Windows 8.1), as well as the likely Windows Blue release date. (Updated 12 June 2013.)

Windows 'Blue': Microsoft blows it

Play the Windows Red slideshow

If you like Windows 8, you'll like -- maybe even love -- Windows 8.1 "Blue." But if you're a denizen of the old-fashioned Desktop world, without a yearning for touch and/or you don't want your PC to act like a smartphone, Windows 8.1 will disappoint -- big time.

Last week, Microsoft invited several members of the press for an on-the-record two-hour demo of Windows 8.1, code-named "Blue." Microsoft took me off its Christmas card list some time ago, but the reports among journos on the ground are telling: Windows 8.1 offers more of the same, with a few new twists for touch users, but nothing substantive for the Desktop.

Executive Summary

The Carter Center welcomes the announcement of preliminary election results by Libya's High National Elections Commission (HNEC) on July 17, 2012, and congratulates HNEC staff for their diligence in completing the tabulation process in a timely manner and for their efforts to ensure that all voters had an opportunity to participate in the elections.
